The resumption of Test Cricket in the English summer gave cricket a breath of fresh air after two months of action in the sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League. In a prelude to their actual matchup with Australia in the Ashes in 2023, England will play a one-off test against Ireland. As a result, Stuart Broad stole the show in the opening session with a remarkable five-wicket haul that shocked Ireland's batting order.

Peter Moor was the first victim of Stuart Broad in the fifth over. Then, in the seventh over, he came back to deliver a double punch by dismissing both the captain, Andrew Balbirnie, and Harry Tector. He later returned after lunch to claim two more as set batter James McCollum (36 off 108) was shown the way to the pavilion. Next, he cleaned up Mark Adair to complete his five-wicket haul.

Ireland were bowled out for 172 in the first innings

Jack Leach had a bright day under the sun claiming three wickets while the remaining two were scalped by Mattew Potts. Debutant Josh Tongue will have to wait for the second innings if he is to enjoy his first international Test wicket in this game. Ireland rode on contributions from James McCollum (36 off 108), Curtis Campher (33 off 79), and Paul Stirling (30 off 35) to reach 172 before being bundled out inside 56.2 overs.

Despite having previously clashed 16 times in different formats, England and Ireland are only currently playing each other in Test cricket for the second occasion. The Lord's, where they played them in their first Test, is where this game is being played. Another important similarity between these two matches is that they both served as the openers for England's Ashes series.

However, unlike their current encounter in the same format, the first one had not begun the English summer. England was able to defeat Ireland by a score of 143 runs in their first Test despite having lost to them three times in the past (including twice in their most recent two limited-overs matches).
