Kane Williamson had a forgettable IPL 2023 season as his stint came to an end due to a knee injury in the opening game. During Gujarat Titans’ season opener against Chennai Super Kings, Williamson landed awkwardly on his right knee while trying to stop a boundary. He even failed to come back for batting in that game.

Later, it got confirmed that the Kiwi got ruled out of the tournament and now, he has retired to New Zealand for further treatment. “I'll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible." - Kane Williamson

According to reports, Williamson will undergo surgery within the next three weeks once the swelling around the knee gets reduced. Kane Williamson said: "Naturally it's disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab. It's going to take some time, but I'll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible."

Regarding his chances of missing the World Cup, the head coach of New Zealand, Gary Stead said: "You take Kane the player for a start, but then Kane the leader and the person he is within our group as well, it's a huge spanner in the works for us. We haven't given up hope that he might be right but at this stage it does look unlikely. Our first thoughts are with Kane at the moment, it's a tough time for him, it's not an injury you expect…it hits you pretty hard."

In some recent series, Tom Latham has captained New Zealand when Kane Williamson has not played. So, he might be the frontrunner to lead the team in the World Cup if Williamson finally misses the World Cup.
