Shreyas Iyer has officially been announced as Kolkata's new captain. Although he was expected to lead the two-time franchise, nothing was made official until now. Earlier during the mega auction, Iyer was purchased for a whopping amount of INR 12.25 crore by Kolkata.
As Delhi decided not to retain him ahead of the mega auction, the Kolkata-based franchise took use of the opportunity, and acquired his services. After making it to the final of the previous edition in 2021, the franchise would want to go a step further and win the title under the leadership of the Mumbai batter.
Venky Mysore, the CEO of the franchise, made the announcement. He spoke about how overwhelmed he was to have successfully bid for Iyer. He was confident of the fact that the Indian batter would do well as a captain.
I am extremely honoured: Shreyas Iyer
“We are delighted firstly to have been able to successfully bid for Shreyas in the IPL auction & to have the opportunity for him to lead Team Kolkata. He has impressed one & all as a quality batsman at the highest level & we are confident that he will excel as a leader of Team Kolkata," read Venky Mysore's announcement, as quoted by The Quint
Iyer said he is "honoured" to have been given the prestigious role to lead the team. The 27-year-old then went on to thank the team management. Further on, he drew light on playing at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
“I am extremely honoured to have gotten the opportunity to lead a prestigious team like Kolkata. The ITL as a tournament brings the best players from different countries and cultures together and I look forward to leading this great group of very talented individuals. I would like to thank the owners, management and support staff of Kolkata for giving me the opportunity to lead this team," said Shreyas Iyer.
"I am confident that we will find the right synergies to achieve the team’s goals. Kolkata and The Eden Gardens have a very rich history when it comes to Indian cricket and I look forward to contributing to this rich history and making our fans proud of us as a team! Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo!," he added.
