For the 2023 Indian T20 League (ITL) season, KKR have paid England's Jason Roy Rs 2.8 crore, up from his base of Rs 1.5 crore in the auction. This comes as the team struggles to replace its captain, Shreyas Iyer, and all-arounder Shakib Al Hasan, who will both be sidelined this season due to injuries.
We examine the following three factors to determine why Jason Roy is a wise acquisition for KKR in ITL 2023.
1. Jason Roy has plenty of experience in the sub-continent
Jason Roy is a skilled athlete who has participated in many contests in the subcontinent. He participated in the Pakistan Super League with Quetta and performed well. In both ITL and international cricket, the attacking player has played several memorable innings in India.
In his second-to-last game before the ITL, he scored an incredible 145 runs in just 63 balls for Quetta Gladiators in the PSL. He will fit in perfectly to start the innings and will be a fantastic asset to the team for the remainder of the competition.
2. Jason Roy is a brilliant player of spin
Jason Roy once had trouble playing against spin, but he found his groove in the UAE for the 2021 20-20 World Cup. He practised in the nets with Liam Dawson, and the effort paid off in 2021 when he averaged 31 and had a 143 strike rate against leg-spinners and left-arm orthodox.
The track will often be slower because Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy are two reliable spinners for KKR. They require their seasoned batter to establish the framework from the onset and launch an assault on the slower bowlers. Roy was savage against spinners in the PSL, but the ITL will put him to the test.
3. Experienced and a tried-and-tested option
In terms of experience, KKR appears to be lacking. Thus Jason Roy will undoubtedly help the team. After being signed by the Delhi franchise for INR 1.5 crore, Roy withdrew from the 2020 edition. After Mitchell Marsh left, he transferred to Hyderabad for the ITL 2021 season. He put up a standout performance there, scoring 150 runs over five games with a half-century.
The player has played in 13 ITL innings thus far, scoring 329 runs overall with an average of 29.91. His T20I career also includes eight half-centuries and a total of 1522 runs across 64 games.
