On a tricky pitch, David Warner and Mitchell Marsh put on a match-winning 144-run partnership to help Delhi chase down a target of 161 runs in 18.1 overs at DY Patil Sports Academy on Thursday. With that, Delhi registered their sixth win this season and kept their hopes alive for the playoffs.
Delhi didn’t make a positive start to the chase. They had lost KS Bharat in the first over itself and Marsh and Warner could only manage to score 38 runs in the first six overs. However, Marsh changed gears from there on, while Warner was happy to play as the second fiddle.
The Australian all-rounder ensured he scored one boundary at least in an over. By the end of 10 overs, Delhi were at 76 for 1. Warner was also dropped by Buttler and was also bowled by Chahal but the bails didn’t come off. He was certainly riding his luck, today.
The duo accelerated quickly in the latter half and went on to stich a match-winning partnership of 144 runs to help the team keep the hopes alive for the playoffs. Mitchell Marsh batted beautifully and produce a match-defining knock of 89 runs in 62 balls. He got out in the 18th over but the game was done and dusted by then.
David Warner remained unbeaten till the end, scoring 52 runs in 41 balls. Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 13 off 4 meant Delhi chased down the score with 11 balls remaining in the end.
Earlier, Rajasthan notched a competitive score of 160 runs in the first innings, thanks to valuable knocks from Devdutt Padikkal and Ravichandran Ashwin. Chetan Sakariya troubled Jos Buttler with his accurate lengths early on and denied the Englishman to get going from the onset.
The Rajasthan pacer, eventually, had him on the last ball of the third over. Buttler scored only 7 runs in 11 balls. Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn’t replicate the innings he played in the last game. He scored 19 off 19 before departing in the 9th over.
Rajasthan, once again, sent Ravichandran Ashwin at number three. He ended up scoring his maiden half-century and put in an important 53-run partnership for the third wicket with Padikkal. Ashwin got out in the 15th over off Marsh and wickets kept falling at regular intervals, thereafter.
However, a 30-ball 48 from Devdutt Padikkal meant Rajasthan reached a good score on the board. As for Delhi, Chetan Sakariya was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 2 wickets for just 23 runs in his quota of 4 overs. Besides, Nortje (2 for 39) and Mitchell Marsh (2 for 25) also picked two wickets each.
