Kolkata still have an outside chance of reaching the playoffs. Shreyas Iyer and Co. beat Hyderabad by 54 runs on Saturday at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium to register their sixth win this season. Kolkata now have 6 wins in 13 matches, while Hyderabad suffered their fifth consecutive defeat in the tournament.
Batting first, Kolkata managed to score 177 runs in the first innings. They made an awful start as the man-in-form, Venkatesh Iyer was out early after scoring just 7 runs in 6 balls. Ajinkya Rahane (28 off 24) looked good but a hamstring injury didn’t help his cause.
Nitish Rana, who fared well in the last game, was looking solid today as well. However, Umran Malik had him caught at deep mid-wicket in the 8th over. Nitish Rana (26 off 16) failed to convert a good start into a big score. Kolkata, at one stage, were 94 for 5 in 11.3 overs.
However, Andre Russell then joined hands with Sam Billings and the duo added 63 runs for the fifth wicket. Billings got out after scoring 34 runs in 29 balls, however, Russell played an unbeaten match-winning knock of 49 runs in 26 balls, a knock which was laced with 3 fours and 4 sixes.
Thanks to that knock, Kolkata notched a competitive score on the board. For Hyderabad, Umran Malik was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 3 for 33 in 4 overs.
In pursuit of the score, Abhishek Sharma ensured runs kept coming at a good rate but wickets fell in intervals at the other end. Kane Williamson, once again, struggled to find his rhythm. He was out bowled off Russell after scoring 9 runs in 17 balls. Rahul Tripathi, who was the man in form, too was struggling to take on the bowlers.
He scored 9 runs in 11 balls before getting caught and bowled off Southee on his 12th delivery. Abhishek Sharma, on the other end, was scoring runs briskly but couldn't complete his fifty. He got out on 43 off Varun Chakravarthy after scoring a valuable knock of 43 runs in 28 balls. Aiden Markram (32 off 35) too was looking good but he too failed to convert the start into a big score.
His wicket in the 15th over led to a collapse as, Hyderabad, in the end, could only manage to score 123 runs on the board. For Kolkata, it was a collective bowling effort. Umesh Yadav (1 for 19) and Tim Southee (2 for 23) bowled beautifully. However, Andre Russell was the pick of the bowlers as he finished with returns with of 3 for 22 in 4 overs. In the end, Kolkata won the game by 54 runs.
