Delhi have kept their hopes alive for the playoffs as they registered their fourth win of the ongoing edition of the Indian T20 League on Thursday. Rishabh Pant and Co. beat Kolkata by 4 wickets to return to winning ways. Riding on an outstanding bowling display from Kuldeep Yadav, Delhi restricted Kolkata to a modest score of 146 runs on the board.
Chetan Sakariya and Axar Patel picked the wickets of Finch (3 off 7) and Venkatesh Iyer (6 off 12) respectively inside the first five overs before Kuldeep Yadav broke the back of Kolkata. The Indian spinner sent Indrajith and Sunil Narine back to the hut in two consecutive deliveries to leave Kolkata in deep trouble at 35 for 4 in 7.4 overs.
Nitish Rana and Shreyas Iyer looked to rebuild the innings and were going pretty well until Kuldeep Yadav, once again came to Delhi's rescue, and got the vital breakthrough of Shreyas Iyer in the 8th over. Three balls later he had Andre Russell leg-before, leaving Kolkata in deep trouble at 83 for 6 in 13.4 overs.
However, Rana and Rinku Singh then added 62 runs for the seventh wicket to take the team to a reasonable score on the board. Both Rinku Singh (23 off 16) and Nitish Rana (57 off 34) got out in the final over while trying to play big shots. In the end, Kolkata, perhaps, had scored 20-30 runs lesser than they would have expected.
However, Shreyas Iyer and Co. started well with the ball. Umesh Yadav, once again, was superb with the ball. He sent Prithvi Shaw back to the hut on the very first ball of the innings before Harshit Rana had Mitchell Marsh caught at fine leg in the second over. Delhi didn’t make a great start to the chase, having lost 2 wickets for just 17 runs on the board.
David Warner, however, once again, played a brilliant knock under pressure and took the scoreboard ticking. He made 42 runs in 26 balls, a knock which was laced with 8 fours. Had he stayed till the end, Delhi would have chased down the score inside 16 overs. However, Umesh Yadav, once again, revived Kolkata’s hopes by sending both Warner and Pant back to the hut in the 10th and 12th over respectively. ‘
Delhi had lost half of their side for 84 runs in 11.1 overs. The match was evenly poised till that stage. However, Kolkata failed to pick wickets, thereafter, as Axar Patel and Rovman Powell added 29 runs for the 6th wicket before the former got out after scoring 24 off 17 balls.
Rovman Powell, however, stayed right till the end and took the team home with one over to spare. The West Indies batter played an unbeaten knock of 33 runs in 16 balls, including 1 four and 3 sixes.
As for Kolkata, it was their fifth consecutive defeat. They made a dream start to their campaign, winning three out of their first four matches. However, Shreyas Iyer and Co. couldn’t win a single game thereafter. Fans found this a perfect opportunity to troll the runners-up of last year. And, on that note, here’s a look at some of the best memes from the 41st match between Delhi and Kolkata:
