Fans witnessed an absolute thriller as Punjab beat Chennai by 11 runs in the 38th match of the Indian T20 league 2022. The game went right down to the wire as Ambati Rayudu made a match out of nothing. Yet, he wasn't able to win the game as he didn't get enough support from the other batters.
As for Punjab, this win comes as a huge sigh of relief for them. They weren't really at their best of late. However, they have now won four out of their first eight games of the 2022 edition. As for Chennai, they have lost yet another high-scoring thriller. Having said that, the pitch wasn't really batting-friendly as several batters from both sides found it difficult to get going.
During the first innings, Punjab's Mayank Agarwal had to depart after scoring 18 runs from 21 balls. Post which, Shikhar Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa put on a comprehensive partnership. The duo added 110 runs. The "Gabbar" was superb in particular. He went on to score an unbeaten 88 from 59 balls. While his strike rate during the innings was 149.15, it consisted of nine fours and two sixes.
On the other hand, Rajapaksa scored a handy 32-ball 42. Thus, Punjab went on to get to a score of 187-4 in their stipulated 20 overs. Dwaine Pretorius had a match to forget as he went for 50 runs in his four overs. When it comes to the second innings, Chennai's top-order were unimpressive once again.
Although Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a 30, he consumed 27 balls for the same. Chennai kept losing wickets at regular intervals. However, Rayudu played a gem of a knock as he nearly single-handedly kept his side in the game. The batter scored 78 runs from just 39 balls. During the process, he struck seven fours and six sixes respectively.
Just when things seemed to be drifting towards the four-time champions, Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada got the Punjab-based franchise back in the game. They were superb at the death. Yet, MS Dhoni hit some lusty blows towards the end and kept Chennai's hopes alive till the end. However, the target proved to be too much as the Ravindra Jadeja-led side only scored 176-6. Fans took to Twitter to post some hilarious memes.
