Punjab won their first game of the Indian T20 league 2022 as they beat Bangalore in a high-scoring encounter. Despite entering a new era, the shades of the past miniseries were clearly visible in Bangalore. They yet again let the opposition walk away with the game.
If the Faf du Plessis-led side are to win this edition, they will have to drastically improve. So what went wrong for them? Today, we shall be taking a look at three reasons why Bangalore lost
1) Poor Bowling:
Like every season, there seems to be a lot of problems with their bowling. Mohammed Siraj was expected to lead their pace attack, but he himself went for plenty. They weren't even able to pick wickets in the powerplay overs.
Their death bowling was poor as well. Although Harshal Patel picked two wickets, he went at an economy of 9. Even Wanindu Hasaranga was expensive, as he went for 40 runs in his four overs.
2) Fielding:
As the old saying goes, catches win matches. Faf pointed out the same after the completion of the match as well. Odean Smith was dropped when he was batting at 1 in the 16th over.
This proved to be costly as he turned out to be the difference between the two sides. Even Shikhar Dhawan was dropped in the fifth over by the wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik. Although it was a difficult chance, the keeper-batter did get his hands to it.
3) Extras:
Extras played a huge role in Bangalore's loss. Just because Punjab gave a lot of Extras, that didn't mean that the Bangalore-based franchise had to return the favour.
The wides in the 16th over made it a very expensive one as well. In total, Bangalore gave 22 Extras.
