Revolting duo Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan might be on the verge of losing their central contracts. The Indian board has decided to take this step after the two players decided to skip the Indian domestic season.
The Indian board is set to announce the contracts for the upcoming season in the next few days. As per sources, there is a strong chance that Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan could be left out of the list as punishment.
Ishan Kishan hasn’t played for Jharkhand despite the strong warning from the Indian board. The 25-year-old had pulled out of the South African Test series citing mental fatigue. Shreyas Iyer was omitted from the squad for the final three Tests vs England. The 29-year-old had complained of fitness issues but the Indian Cricket Academy has given him a clean chit.
Future in doubt for Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer?
In what could be a huge blow for Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, the Indian Cricket Board has decided to come hard on the duo. According to a source from the Indian Board, the two players are set to miss out on the central contract for the coming season.
One source while speaking to the Times of India said “The selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, has almost finalized the centrally contracted players for the 2023-24 season too, which the board will announce soon. Kishan and Iyer are likely to be excluded from that list, as both haven’t been playing domestic cricket, despite the diktat to do so”
Shreyas Iyer, it was said that had complained off fitness issues for which he was omitted for the final 3 Tests vs England. This theory has been rubbished as a few murmurs have confirmed that it was due to his patchy batting form.
The 29-year-old has seen his Test form nosedive after a strong start to his career. Ishan Kishan will also be fretting about his future after he has openly defied the board. The 25-year-old last played for India during the T20I series at home versus Australia.
Team India has a busy few months ahead after the IPL season ends. The first challenge will be the T20I World Cup to be played in the Caribbean, this will be followed by a few bilateral series. The end of 2024 will see India tour to Australia for a five-match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
