India and South Africa faced off in the second ODI on October 9, Sunday at Ranchi. The match was a crucial one as the Men in Blue lost the first ODI by 9 runs despite Sanju Samson’s heroics. With regards to the toss, South Africa skipper Keshav Maharaj won it and elected to bat first.
The openers, Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan tried to vindicate the decision of Maharaj, who led the team in the absence of Temba Bavuma. However, de Kock returned for just 5 runs, putting the Proteas in deep trouble. Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram joined hands to lift the team from the labyrinth after the departure of Malan and put on a partnership of 129 runs for the third wicket.
The Maharaj-led team collapsed after the fall of the third wicket and lost half of their men after putting 215 runs on the board. However, David Miller, who came into the game in supreme form, lifted the team yet again and joined hands with Wayne Parnell until the latter returned for 16 runs in the 47th over. However, Miller failed to fire in the end and the Proteas put on a total of 278 runs at the end of the first innings.
India stun with thumping win
The Indian openers, skipper Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill, did not secure a great start for the team as both crumbled in quick succession. While Dhawan returned for 13 runs, Gill perished for 26 runs, failing to convert his start into a big innings.
However, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan joined hands together and steadied the Indian innings. The duo reached the half-century landmark in no time and kept coming up with boundaries at regular intervals to keep up with the required run rate.
Iyer, the trusted and renowned middle-order batter kept India alive in the race by playing the anchoring role. Kishan, known for his aggressive intent, kept the boundaries coming from the other end. However, the southpaw perished for 93 runs, falling 7 runs short of the three-figure landmark.
However, Men in Blue won the match by 7 wickets on the back of a stupendous century from Shreyas Iyer and levelled the series 1-1. The decider will be played on Tuesday and both teams will toil hard to clinch the series.
