The Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia will reportedly see five Tests being played between the two teams. Currently, it is a four-match series. However, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo, changes will be applicable from the World Test Championship cycle 2023-25. In the current cycle, the series will consist of four games. Notably, both teams will play the series later this year with the schedule yet to be announced.
This will be the first time since 1991-92 that both teams will be playing a five-match Test series. At that time, the Aussie won by 4-0 at home, and the world saw the rise of the eventual legend of the game, Sachin Tendulkar. It is to be noted that the start of the five-match Test series between both teams will be in Australia.
The World Number Two Test side will travel the Oceania continent for the series in December 2024. The return series will be played in the 2025-27 cycle of the championship. This series will be played in early 2027. Talking about the rivalry between both teams, the World Number One Test is yet to win a Test against the 2021 World Test Championship finalists since late 2014.
In 2014-15, the Aussies had beaten the Asian side by 2-0. In the same series, Dhoni announced his retirement from the longest form of the game. When the Kangaroos travelled to the Asian country in 2017, both teams fought well but the Virat Kohli's men triumphed by 2-1. In 2018-19, Kohli's men created history after winning the series for the first time Down Under.
In the next series, played in Australia, India once again managed to beat Tim Paine's men even after losing its first-choice players. Notably, there were voices raised on increasing the number of games from four to five given the kind of rivalries both teams have. Now, it is set to become a reality in the course of the next five years.
The upcoming series between both teams will be the last time when four games will be played. The schedule of the series is yet to be announced.
