The Indian women’s team thrashed Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the final on Saturday to lift the women’s Asia Cup title for the seventh time. The bowling unit exhibited an outstanding display in the most important game of the tournament.
Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first. They looked to make a cautious start but Athapaththu, unfortunately, got run-out in the third over of the innings. It was followed with three wickets in three balls in the next over as Sri Lanka were left reeling at 10 for 4 in just 4 overs.
Renuka Singh then had her third wicket in the form of Kavisha Dilhari as Sri Lanka lost half of their side for just 16 runs on the board. The Island nation would have folded under a 50-run total but small cameos from Ranasinghe (13 off 20) and Ranaweera (18 off 22) helped the team reach 65 for 9 at the end of the first innings.
Renuka Singh, once again, led from the front as she picked three vital wickets of Madavi (1), Perera (0), and Dilhari (1), giving away just 5 runs in her quota of three overs. The likes of Gayakwad (2 for 16) and Sneh Rana (2 for 13) also returned with impressive figures. In reply, Indian women’s team chased down the score in 8.3 overs.
Sri Lanka had Shafali Verma (5 off 8) and Jemimah Rodrigues (2 off 4) out early but Smriti Mandhana’s 51 off just 25 balls meant India chased down the score in just 8.3 overs. India, as a result, won the game by 8 wickets and clinched their 7th Asia Cup title.
Sri Lankan women’s team, who were playing their first Asia Cup final in 14 years, were crushed by a ruthless Indian team on the big day. The fans have come up with congratulatory tweets for India’s women’s team for clinching another Asia Cup title.
