The documentary ‘Bandon Me Tha Dum’ on Voot is bringing a lot of stories from the India team that we don’t get to see otherwise. In one recent episode, an anecdote about the Gabba Test from Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 came to light. The incident is about Rohit Sharma getting mad at Shardul Thakur for getting out.
In the preface of this story, Mayank Agarwal and Washington Sundar got out in quick succession and Shardul Thakur was asked to take India home. The bowling all-rounder however went for a six and got out.
In the documentary ‘Bandon Mein Tha Dum’ Ajinkya Rahane recalls this incident and says, “Shardul Thakur was walking in when Washington got out. Rohit told him ‘This is your opportunity of becoming a hero’. And he just nodded and left. Rohit was sitting next to me. He said, ‘let the match get over, let us win, I will teach him a lesson. I said, forget it, we’ll see once the match is over.”
The bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin also spoke of the same incident. The bowler, speaking about Rohit Sharma’s plan said, “As he was about to go, Rohit said, “Shardul, finish it”. This is exactly what he said, I totally understand Shardul. He would have imagined… ‘like how Ravi bhai said, Dhoni hits a six and wins the World Cup.”
Jokingly the Indian spinner continues, “So inside Shardul’s head, he has already figured out the moment, the commentary, the book the movie, everything. So, Shardul’s gone for it, it’s gone to short square leg and got out. And everybody inside is like, “what are you doing?”Despite Thakur’s rash shot, India was taken across the line by an emphatic Rishabh Pant’s 89. With a win at Gabba India broke many records and also took home the series by 2-1. Thus, the Indian fans cherish it even today. The Indian Test team will be going to England for a rescheduled Test match starting on July 1.
