Australia won the second Test at Lord's by a margin of 43 runs, increasing their advantage in the ongoing Ashes 2023. The second Test was more routine than the first, which was a hard-fought triumph for Pat Cummins and his team. They now have a 2-0 advantage in the five-Test series after the victory. Even though the second Test included a few contentious moments, Jonny Bairstow's strange stumped dismissal received the most attention. Even as the Australian team entered and exited Lord's, home supporters booed them.

Talking of the dismissal, after ducking Cameron Green's very short delivery, Bairstow strolled slowly out of the crease towards his partner Stokes, thinking the ball was dead. However, a quick-thinking Alex Carey under-armed the ball to remove the bails and pulled off the rarest of dismissals. While the English crowd yelled abuse and booed at the Australian players the entire time, Bairstow was left absolutely perplexed. Naturally, the next morning, English Newspapers came up with some of their signature cryptic headlines.

Here are some of them:

"My thoughts around it is, when is it justified that umpires have called 'over'? Does the square-leg umpire making some movement justify that? Jonny Bairstow was in his crease and then came out to have a chat in the middle. I’m not disputing if it was out, it was. If the shoe was on the other foot, I would've had to think about the whole spirit of the game. But it has happened, it was out. We have to move on… Do I want to win in that manner? No," said Ben Stokes after the game.

At the same time, Pat Cummins had contrasting opinions. The Kangaroos' skipper said, "You see Jonny does it all the time. He did it on day one to David Warner. He did it in 2019 to Steve . It's a really common thing for keepers to do if they see about a batter keep leaving their crease. So, Kez , full credit to him. He saw the opportunity. I think Jonny did it a few balls beforehand. Rolled it at the stumps. Jonny left his crease. You leave the rest to the umpires."
