Former Australian skipper and legendary batter Ricky Ponting has come up with praising words for the 26-year-old middle-order batter Tim David. Ponting feels that the latter has the ability to win the World Cup for Australia. He said that David’s style recalls the memories of his former teammate Andrew Symonds.
Later on, Ponting went on to say that he would’ve picked David in the team if he have had that authority. World Champion skipper lauded the striking instinct that David possesses. Punter also named the Singapore-born batter as a match-winner.
The 47-year-old said that he would be a triumph card for the Aussie team to clinch the title in the T20 World Cup which will be played on their home soil. He has also ranked the youngster of 14 T20Is above all in terms of performance in the last two years.
Tim David actually reminds me a bit of someone like Andrew Symonds - Ricky Ponting
“If I was a selector, I would love to have someone like that in my team. If he’s playing or not, just to have that sort of striking power ability around, he’s an out-and-out match-winner,” Ponting was quoted as saying to ESPNCricinfo.
One of the batting greats of all time also talked about their potential for David. He also compared him to the batter of Andrew Symonds who played for Australia back in the 50-over World Cup of 2003.
“He’s the sort of player that could actually win you a World Cup. He’s not just the average run-of-the-mill guy that might just sneak into a squad. I mean, he actually reminds me a bit of someone like Andrew Symonds back in the 2003 World Cup,” he added later.
“You know if you get them in and you give him an opportunity there’s a chance of winning a tournament for you. That’s how I’d be looking at him right now. I know there are some other great world-quality players in the middle order for Australia. But probably none of them boasts the resume as good as Tim’s over the last two years.” Ponting concluded.
