Australia skipper Meg Lanning has announced her retirement from international cricket at the age of 31. The decision is in effect immediately. Notably, the right-hander missed the Ashes 2023 in the England, and Ireland tour, and the home series against the West Indies due to an undisclosed medical issue. This could be a reason for her to retire at an early age.

Talking about her achievements as captain, she led the team to T20 World Cup wins in 2014, 2018, and 2020. Apart from this, the Kangaroos Women's ODI World Cup 2022 title came under Lanning, beating their Ashes rivals. Apart from this, she was also part fo the 2012 T20 World Cup win and the 2013 ODI World Cup, (Lisa Sthalekar's last assignment for Australia) 

"The decision to step away from international cricket was a difficult one to make, but I feel now is the right time for me," Lanning said in a statement.

"I've been incredibly fortunate to enjoy a 13-year international career, but I know now is the right time for me to move on to something new.

"Team success is why you play the game, I'm proud of what I have been able to achieve and will cherish the moments shared with teammates along the way."

Cricket Australia's CEO extended his congratulations and farewell to one of the longest-serving captains in Australia Women's Cricket.

"On behalf of Australian Cricket, I would like to congratulate Meg on her incredible career as an Australian cricketer and all she has achieved as captain of the Australian women's cricket team," Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said.

"One of the finest cricketers Australia has produced, Meg's supreme achievements with the bat have been matched by her inspiring leadership.
