Recently, in a Chief Executives Committee meeting of the Cricket's governing body in Dubai on Friday (8th April), the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board proposed his idea of a four-nation quadrangular tournament, involving India, Pakistan, England, and Australia.
The former Pakistan cricketer has often raised his voice to resume the cricketing rivalry between India and Pakistan. He expressed his desire to play the two nations play more often except only in the Cricket governing body's events and Asia Cup. With an aim to make that happen, Raza pitched his idea in the meeting on Friday.
Currently, as per the rules, multi-lateral tournaments is restricted to only triangular events. Whether the governing body gives a nod to the quadrangular event proposed by the PCB chairman remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the concerned people from the members of the Finance and Commercial Affairs is also of the view that the multi-team tournament could also diminish the value of other tournaments such as World Cup and Champions Trophy.
“The matter was discussed by the CEC and it was backed by quite a few boards, if not by the F&CA. The matter goes to board with two points of view,” a member of the Cricket Council, who was part of the CEC, told Cricbuzz.
As for the Board of Control for Cricket in India, they have made a neutral stance to the proposal of now. While they haven’t opposed the idea but they didn’t give their nod either. It is worth mentioning that India and Pakistan haven’t played any bilateral event for almost a decade due to the political tensions between the two nations. It will be interesting to see if BCCI agree to Ramiz Raza’s proposal and the fans could see India and Pakistan play against each other more often.
Apart from the BCCI’s stance, another problem is to find a suitable window to conduct such a tournament. It is pertinent to note that from 2009 to 2021, a world event has taken place every year besides 2018 and 2020.
