In a recent announcement, the Indian cricket board has come up with a new ‘impact player’ rule in the Indian T20 League to make it more interesting and thrilling. The board is planning to use this rule in the 2023 edition of the Indian T20 League. Although, ahead of the next season of the franchise T20 League, they are about to use this in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy alongside other domestic T20 tournaments.
The Indian cricket board under the leadership of former legendary Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly and cricket administrator Jay Shah, has sent an official note to all the state cricket associations of India.
“With the ever-growing popularity of T20 cricket, it is imperative that we look at introducing new dimensions which will make this format more attractive and interesting not only for our viewers but also the participating teams from a strategic viewpoint,” reads the note issued by the Indian cricket board.
Here’s a look at complete details of this new ‘impact player’ introduced by the national cricket board of India
Talking about the concept of the rule, it will be for adding a substitute apart from the selected playing XI. Before the match, each team will be entitled to name its four substitutions. They will be allowed to use one substitution per match in the tournament. It can be done before the 14th over of the inning ends. The teams can do it in either of the two innings or between innings also.
The substitute player who will arrive on the ground will be allowed to both or bowl in the match. It will have nothing to do with what the player has done, be it batting or bowling. The substitute will be allowed to bat even if he would be replacing a batter who has been dismissed. Whereas, he can also bowl a complete quota of four overs if he goes as a replacement for the bowler who would’ve already completed his quota of four overs.
“The player who is replaced by an Impact Player can no longer take part in the remainder of the match and is also not permitted to return as a substitute fielder. If a player gets injured while fielding in mid-over, the current playing condition prevails under 24.1 – substitute fielders,” added further in the official circular of the Indian Cricket Board.
