Indian team’s chances for qualification in the final of the World Test Championship 2023 have gone a bit easier now after the 0-0 result of the recently concluded two-match Test series between Pakistan and England. Now, both Babar’s men and Kiwis are finally out of contention for the final of WTC.
The Test matches Pakistan appeared in were all included in the cycle of the World Test Championship 2023. Currently, they are ranked seventh in the updated tally of the championship having 38.1 points in the column. Whereas, Tim Southee & co. are positioned on the eighth number having 27.27 points.
Now, New Zealand has a remaining Test series against Sri Lanka in which they will play two Tests. But even after finishing the series at 2-0, they’ll only have 38.46 points.
Now, four teams who are still in contention on the statistical grounds are Australia, India, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. England have also some minor chances but they are now completely dependent on the result of the clashes between the other teams.
Speaking of India, they are set to host Australia for a full-fledged four-match Test series starting from the 9th of February to the 13th of March.
With said that, here we’ll have a look at India’s chances for qualification in the final of the second edition of the World Test Championship.
Scenarios for India's qualification for WTC Final
Scenario 1: India to beat Australia by 4-0, 3-1, 3-0:
The Indian team will be there in the final of the World Test Championship if they outplay Pat Cummins’ men by a margin of 4-0, 3-1, and 3-0. If the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team wins the three Tests out of four, they’ll have 62.5% which would be enough to finish at the second spot.
Scenario 2: India to beat Australia by 2-0 or 2-1:
If India fails to win three Tests in the four-match Test series against Australia, they'll have to win at least two matches and let Australia not win any match in the series.
Apart from that, in this scenario, India's hopes will also rely on the result of the Test series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
