Before the start of the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022, Kapil Dev had said that it was difficult to compare Mohammed Shami to Shaheen Afridi as the latter has been impressive whenever he stepped onto the field.

When asked to opine on the comparison between Shami and Afridi, Kapil said that he would have rather compared the Pakistani pacer to Jasprit Bumrah as it would have made more sense. Emphasizing Shami’s lack of games, Kapil had said earlier that it would be unfair to compare the two pacers.

“You can't judge anything by just one over. Afridi was spot on when talked about looking at the performances of the last two years where Shaheen has been very good. Whenever he has got an opportunity, he has made an impact. I wouldn't even like to compare (Shami and Shaheen),” Kapil said in a joint interview with ABP News and Samaa TV.

“Shami hasn't played a lot of cricket of late. I would have perhaps compared Bumrah with Afridi if he was there but can't compare Shami and Afridi because there is a lot of difference,” said the former Indian cricketer further.

The two pacers in the 20-20 World Cup 2022 so far

Both pacers had a good outing for their respective teams in the warm-up games of the showpiece event. Shami, in specific, bowled the final over against Australia in the warm-up game and picked up three wickets in the over and won the game for India singlehandedly.

However, regarding the Super 12 stages, Afridi has been wicketless so far much to the dreariness of Pakistani fans and the team management. Shami, on the other hand, has racked up 2 wickets in the 2 matches that he has played so far.

Many fans, who pointed out the difference, said Afridi was not ready for the event and further added that he was brought in even before the pacer completely recovered from his injury. Missing out on the Asia Cup squad, Afridi underwent rehabilitation in London before making a comeback in the 20-20 World Cup.

As it stands, Pakistan are dependent on India to make it through to the semi-finals. Their road to the semis looks tough as they have to win all of their remaining matches and also depend on other teams’ results.
