The first ODI between India and West Indies got underway on Friday at 7:00 pm. The Indian team management gave the much-deserved opportunities to Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson in the absence of senior players. The West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss and decided to put India in to bat first.

The Indian openers captain Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill walked out to the middle with hopes of giving a solid start to the team. Dhawan made his intentions clear in the first over itself as he scored back-to-back boundaries against Alzarri Joseph. Gill also didn’t hold back as he started his innings with a beautiful drive through covers which fetched him a boundary off the very first ball of his innings.

Dhawan made amends for his two consecutive low scores against England in the last two ODIs as he looked confident right from the word go. Both the openers expressed themselves and didn’t miss any opportunity to score on the bad deliveries by the West Indian bowlers.

The openers brought up a 100-run partnership between them at the end of 14 overs. The southpaw completed his half-century off just 52 balls as he ran an easy single on the second ball of the 17th over.

The partnership was finally broken by the West Indies in the 18th over of the innings as Gill was run out by Nicholas Pooran. After Gill’s dismissal, Dhawan carried on his innings and managed to find boundaries at regular intervals as he didn’t let the run-rate drop. The Indian captain got involved in another brilliant partnership with Shreyas Iyer as both batters made run-scoring look easy out in the middle.

The swashbuckling opener was seen enjoying his time out in the middle as he got closer to his 18th ODI hundred. Everything seemed to be going right for India as they crossed 200-run mark in the 32nd over and looked set to go past 350 easily.

With just three runs away from his first ODI hundred in the West Indies, Dhawan tried to slice a wide delivery from Gudakesh Motie only for the ball to travel in the air to Sharmarh Brooks, who completed an incredible catch at backward point jumping to his full height. Dhawan was dismissed for 97 off 99 balls, smashing ten fours and three sixes in his innings.
