West Indies and Scotland faced off in the group stage match of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 on October 17, Sunday and much to the stupefaction of the spectators, it turned out to be an upset. Scotland, who batted first in the innings, gathered 160 runs for the loss of 5 wickets at the end.
The opener George Munsey, top-scored with the bat and ended up remaining unbeaten at 66 runs and helped Scotland put on the great total on the board. Skipper Richie Berrington, who failed to make an impact with the bat, scored only 16 runs while Chris Greaves remained unbeaten scoring as many runs.
The mind-blowing miracle from Scotland
West Indies, who came on to bat after leaking runs with the ball, started crumbling and lost wickets in quick succession after the powerplay. However, the Caribbean did enjoy a great first 6 overs as they scored 53 runs in the powerplay losing 2 wickets.
Despite a good start, West Indies lost the match by 42 runs and were bowled out for just 118 runs. Jason Holder, who tried to keep the intent alive, scored 38 runs before he made his way back. Nicholas Pooran, the losing skipper, said that it was disappointing and added that the team would look to bounce back from the loss.
Pooran admitted to the poor run from the West Indies and hoped to make it to the next round of the showpiece event. The southpaw further added that the batters let the team down and looked extremely unhappy with the intent they displayed.
‘Tough loss for us. Disappointing for sure. I guess now we got to do the hardwork now and win both the games. 160 was a par score. The middle-order batting was disappointing. We have been struggling in the middle order for some time and it continues. Definitely not acceptable (asked about the batting against Scotland's spinners). The ball wasn't spinning much,” Pooran said in the post-match interview.
‘We got reflect and get better. Next two games are must win. I guess when you perform bad as players, you want the next game to come as quickly as possible. I don't think we were complacent. We did get off to a good start, but disappointing after the powerplay,” he added.
