England are currently in dire straits, as far as their Test Cricket performances are concerned. They are ranked fifth in the ICC Test team rankings and their performances over the last couple of years don’t inspire a lot of confidence.
The England Test team, led by Joe Root, haven’t won a Test series in their last 6 Test assignments. They suffered series defeats at the hands of Sri Lanka, India, New Zealand, Australia, and the West Indies.
Following a humiliating 4-0 defeat in the recent Ashes series, Chris Silverwood was sacked as the head coach of the team. They couldn’t win a single game in the series. Recently, Joe Root stepped down as England’s Test captain and Ben Stokes has replaced him for the role.
Earlier, Paul Collingwood was serving as the interim coach of the England Cricket Team. However, he hasn’t taken over the role of the head coach. If reports are to be believed, then South African former cricketer, Gary Kirsten is all set to become the new head coach of England’s Test team.
He will take over the role after the completion of the 2022 edition of the Indian T20 League. It also means that Garry Kirsten will end his association with Gujarat Titans after the Indian T20 League 2022. However, as per the contract, he will be with the franchise if they qualify for the playoffs and reach the finals.
And, if that happens, then he won’t be able to spend a lot of time with the players before England plays the next Test series against New Zealand, starting June 2, 2022. Apart from Kirsten, the likes of Simon Katich and Ottis Gibson too are in the fray for roles in either red-ball or white-ball cricket.
Meanwhile, Ben Stokes, who was appointed as the Root’s deputy in Test Cricket, will now take up the new role of leading the team. The official announcement is all set to be made in a couple of days.
