Najam Sethi shocked everyone as he withdrew himself from the race for the next Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). In December 2022, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed him as the PCB Chairman to head the interim management committee. Meanwhile, that committee's tenure was due to expire Wednesday.

However, Sethi was considered a favourite to become the next Chairman. But, now, he has come up with a tweet to confirm his withdrawal from the race. Sethi wrote: “Salaam everyone! I don’t want to be a bone of contention between Asif Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif. Such instability and uncertainty is not good for PCB. Under the circumstances I am not a candidate for Chairmanship of PCB. Good luck to all stakeholders.”

Here is the shared tweet:

Asif Ali Zardari is the head of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He is also Sharif’s coalition partner in the Government. Former PCB Chairman, Zaka Ashraf is most likely to become the next Chairman as he has the backing of PPP. Sethi replaced Ramiz Raja in December 2022 and his main focus was to reconstruct the sport’s domestic structure under the 2014 constitution. However, during his tenure, some major decisions were taken in order to improve Pakistan cricket’s infrastructure.

Mickey Arthur got appointed as the director of cricket while Grant Bradburn, as the head coach. Along with them, Morne Morkel got appointed as the national team’s bowling coach for a period of six months. Recently, their proposed Hybrid model for the Asia Cup got accepted as the tournament is all set to take place from 31 August to 17 September. Pakistan have the hosting rights and hence, four matches will be played in Pakistan while nine matches will be played in Sri Lanka, as per the hybrid model.

Regarding it, Sethi said: "I am elated that our hybrid version for the ACC Asia Cup 2023 has been accepted. This means the PCB will remain as the event host and stage matches in Pakistan with Sri Lanka as the neutral venue, which was required due to the Indian cricket team's inability to travel to Pakistan.”
