On 10 June 2023, day four of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, all eyes were on Team India as Australia finished day three with a lead of 296 runs with six wickets in hand. Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green were the overnight batters. So, fans were hoping for a better show from the bowlers of the Men in Blue in order to wrap up the Aussies as quickly as possible.
However, they had a great as Umesh Yadav struck early by taking the wicket of Labuschagne. The number one-ranked batter in the longest format of the game got out on 41 runs off 126 balls, including four boundaries. Then, Ravindra Jadeja struck for the third time in this inning by taking the wicket of Green.
India’s highest-ever chase in Tests is 406 runs against West Indies
He scored 25 runs off 95 balls, including four boundaries. Then, Mitchell Starc came out to bat along with the wicketkeeper batter, Alex Carey. They put up a partnership of 93 runs for the seventh wicket. Finally, Mohammed Shami took the wicket of Starc as he scored 41 runs off 57 balls, including seven fours. It was quite frustrating for Rohit Sharma and his men to leak those quick runs during that period. Then, skipper Pat Cummins came out to bat but he just added five runs. But, after that, the Aussies declared their innings with a lead of 443 runs.
In the second innings, Australia declared after scoring 270 runs for eight wickets. For India, Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets for 58 runs in 23 overs. Then, Umesh Yadav took two wickets for 54 runs in 17 overs and Mohammed Shami grabbed two wickets for 39 runs in 16.3 overs. Mohammed Siraj had an expensive outing as he took only one wicket for 80 runs in 20 overs. Meanwhile, Shardul Thaku only failed to take any wickets. Thus, they set a mammoth target of 444 runs for India. Hence, India have to pull off a miracle and a record-breaking chase to win this final at the Oval.
Here is how fans have reacted:
Irrespective of how they score, if they are slightly serious about winning...they should finish the day with not more than 3 wickets down
