In what has come out as a shock to all, Sri Lanka cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested in Sydney over alleged rape charges on November 6th.
This however isn’t the first time that a cricketer has been in the news for rape accusations. Let’s look at five top cricketers who were accused of rape or sexual assault.
Danushka Gunathilaka
The latest to be added to this list is the Sri Lanka batter Danushka Gunathilaka. The southpaw was taken to Sydney City Police station in the early hours of Sunday following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman on November 2nd. The 31-year-old will be produced in Sydney court on Monday.
Amit Mishra
Former Team India bowler, Amit Mishra was accused of assaulting a female friend in a Bangalore hotel in 2015. The complaint was lodged by a 34-year-old film producer from Bangalore who accused Mishra of verbally abusing her, twisting her right arm and throwing a kettle at her inside the luxury hotel room. The high court later granted an interim stay on lower court proceedings.
Sandeep Lamichchane
Nepal cricket star and former captain Sandeep Lamichchane was accused of raping a 17-year-old in a hotel in Kathmandu. The Nepal cricketer was sent to judicial custody until the final hearing of the case. He has since then been suspended from Nepal cricket following rape accusations.
Makhaya Ntini
South Africa’s first black cricketer Makhaya Ntini was accused and later charged with rape accusations in 1999. He was convicted in the court of the sexual assault charges and finally acquitted of the charges.
Rubel Hossain
Bangladesh fast bowler Rubel Hossain was accused of rape by Bangladeshi actress Naznin Akhter Happy in 2015. In a shocking turn of events, however, the actress withdrew the case after Hussain’s match-winning heroics at the World Cup. She had earlier claimed that Hossain was having an ‘intimate affair’ with her on the pretext of marriage.
