Pakistan are on the verge of an early knockout from the 20-20 World Cup 2022 after losing their second straight game in the Super-12 stage. The Babar Azam-led side started their campaign with a disappointing loss against India in a thrilling encounter. In their second match, they failed to chase down the target of 131 against Zimbabwe which led to a humiliating loss. The consecutive losses have put them in a do-or-die stage where they’re dependent on other teams’ results for their qualification to the semi-finals.
India were in a similar stage last time around in the 2021 edition of the tournament, where they failed to win their first two matches against Pakistan and New Zealand. Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha has shared his insights regarding the rise and fall of these two teams and tried to explain India’s strategy to change their fate.
“Sunny sir said that Pakistan is a good side, but the problem is the middle order and if they answered the questions before coming into this World Cup. I feel you have to answer all the questions before you come into a tournament like these and that’s where you see these questions lingering around,” Pragyan Ojha said on India Today.
The former spinner went back to the 2019 ODI World Cup and picked up a specific example.
“In 2019, the number 4 batter question was lingering around the Indian team and that is where India worked hard and tried to answer the question. And what does a champion team do It answers those questions which they feel that they are not up to the mark. That is whereIndia has improved and Pakistan are still trying to build themselves up. The loss to India has put psychological pressure on them and maybe that impacted the game against Zimbabwe,” Ojha concluded on the topic.
After the loss against Zimbabwe, Pakistan need to win all of their remaining matches in the tournament. Their fate also depends upon India winning all of their remaining matches.
