Hardik Pandya has been named as the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) side for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. After the appointment of Pandya as a captain the fans have raged and slammed the management for the decision of removing Rohit Sharma from the leadership roles of the five-time champions. They have even lost followers on social media, and some fans have even burnt the jerseys of the franchises.
Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has backed the star all-rounder. He feels that the call taken by the management was right as the team would need to think beyond the 36-year-old opener and felt the need for fresh thinking under a new skipper. Previously former India opener Aakash Chopra also backed Pandya by labelling him ‘not a finished product’.
Hardik was traded from Gujarat Titans (GT) for an all-cash deal of 15 crore INR and on the condition that he will be leading the side in the upcoming season. He has been out of action as he suffered an injury during the ODI World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh.
We shouldn't go into rights and wrongs: Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar said, "We shouldn't go into rights and wrongs. But, the decision they have taken is for the benefit of the team. In the last two years, Rohit's contribution, even with the bat, has dipped a little bit. Earlier, he used to score big, but in the last two years they finished No. 9 or No. 10 the year before last year and in the last year they qualified for the playoffs."
"But we missed seeing the mojo in Rohit Sharma that we used to see in the previous few years. Maybe, he was a little tired because of playing continuous cricket, he was a little tired because of captaincy, leading India and the franchise," he added.
"I feel that the decision, they have kept in mind that Hardik is a young captain who has produced results. Hardik has led Gujarat to the finals twice, and he led them to the title in 2022. I think they have made him captain by considering all this."
