Once a prominent member of the Australian Cricket Team, Michael Slater is struggling with mental health issues. He was arrested in October last year for charges of harassment and intimidation of his ex-wife. As per reports, he allegedly sent dozens of intimidating texts and calls to his ex-wife.
However, he wasn't sent to jail and instead has been told to spend three weeks in a mental health hospital after getting cleared of domestic violence charges by Sydney court. The judge of the hearing, Magistrate Ross Hudson highlighted the importance of treating the cause and not the consequence.
“Since February, Mr. Slater has recognized his need to stay medicated and to stay on top of his mental health,” Mr Hudson said. “He’s shown a tangible commitment to therapy and counseling. I am of the view that we should treat the cause, not the consequences, of a crime,” he added.
For the unversed, Michael Slater has been struggling with mental health issues for a few years now. He has been diagnosed with several mental disorders. The former Australian cricketer suffers from major depressive disorder, Alcohol addiction, borderline personality disorder, and ADHD. Slater has, in fact, met as many as five separate psychiatrists to treat his illness. He has, apparently, spent 100 days in different mental health facilities.

Talking about his international cricket career, Slater played 74 Tests for Australia. He scored 5312 runs at an average of 42.8. Besides, he also represented Australia in 42 ODIs, scoring 987 runs at an average of 24.1.
The Ashes series in 2001 was Michael Slater’s last series of his international career. Poor performances didn’t help his cause and Justin Langer took his place. It was also learnt that the Slater was a bit angry towards Langer. Later, it was revealed that the former was suffering from a maniac bipolar disorder.
