After that, Mohammad Amir returned to play for Pakistan on their tour of New Zealand in 2016. He played a crucial role for the Men in Green when they won the Champions Trophy in England in 2017. Amir had a brilliant spell against India in the final. After that, he last played for Pakistan in 2020. Since then, he has not made a comeback for the national team. Eventually, in 2020, Amir called time on his international career as he had received ill-treatment from the then-management. He publicly shared it and controversy arose among players and fans.

But, recently, the current PCB Chairman, Najam Sethi allowed him to train at the National High-Performance Centre. During a media interaction, as quoted by Sportskeeda, Najam Sethi said: "Mohammad Amir can play international cricket for Pakistan if he takes his retirement back. I always took a strong stance against match-fixing. I believe no convicted player should be spared, but at the same time, a player should be allowed to resume international cricket once he has completed his years of penalty. Mohammad Amir thinks he is not dealt fairly by the previous regime of PCB, including selection committee and chairman Ramiz Raja." Recently, Amir was seen playing in the PSL and LLC Masters.
