The Gujarat-based franchise will be making its debut in the 15th edition of the Indian T20 league. Despite being a new team, they were absolutely sensational during the mega auction as they managed to get some world-class players. On paper, they look like a really good side.
It would be poetic if they go on to win the title in their first appearance. A few things point towards the possibility of them doing the same. Today, we shall be taking a look at five reasons why Gujarat can win the Indian T20 League 2022.
1) Experience:
In the end, it is always the seasoned campaigners that help a side win the title. Although they are led by an inexperienced captain, Gujarat have a lot of experienced players in their side. First things first, they have the likes of David Miller, Matthew Wade and Wriddhiman Saha.
All three of them have been playing for quite a while now. They also have the likes of Mohammed Shami and Lockie Ferguson. Although Rashid Khan is still young, it wouldn't be an overstatement to call him a T20 veteran.
2) Top-class finishers:
Gujarat boasts of a very good lower-middle order. Players like Miller, Hardik Pandya and Rahul Tewatia are expected to bat at five, six and seven respectively. All of them can single-handedly win games with the bat.
If it's in Miller's arc, he is definitely going to deposit the ball out of the park. Moreover, his current form has been superb as well.
3) Spinners:
Spinners have always played a big role in the Indian T20 league. Every title-winning campaign has seen a dominant spinner do well in that particular tournament. As far as the spinners of the Pandya-led side are concerned, they have two leggies in the form of Tewatia and Rashid.
Although the 28-year-old is more popular for his batting, his bowling was impressive during the 2021 edition. As for Rashid, he has been one of the best spinners for quite a while now. Besides, the franchise also has Sai Kishore and Jayant Yadav, who have the ability to control the flow of runs.
4) All-rounders:
Gujarat's USP has to be their all-rounders. They have plenty of three-dimensional players. Be it Vijay Shankar or Gurkeerat Singh Mann, both could bat at the top order and bowl a few overs as well. The likes of skipper Pandya and Tewatia are going to be Gujarat's key players.
Even the young Vicky Ostwal showed glimpses of his potential during the U19 World Cup 2022. Dominic Drakes is another aggressive all-rounder who can do wonders. Last but not the least, the bowling all-rounders like Rashid and Jayant are more than capable with the bat.
5) Pacers:
Gujarat have two express pacers in the form of Shami and Ferguson. Both can bowl in the powerplay overs, as well as at the death. It is going to be really hard for opposition batters to tackle this duo.
Moreover, the Gujarat-based franchise also have a superb backup in the form of Varun Aaron. As far as the skipper is concerned, he was recently declared fit to bowl. Thus, Gujarat have a lot of options in the pace department as well.
