Representing a country could be a dream come true for any player and the easiest format that one could make a cut to is the T20Is. However, with the shortest format of the game evolving over time, many are opining that it is the future of the sport and the One Day internationals might die out over time. There are players from India like Virat Kohli, who eventually went on to prove their prowess in all three formats of the game
On the other hand, Test cricket is considered to be the pinnacle of patience and the one who tops the same is given equal recognition as in T20Is. We decided to handpick five modern-day Indian players who were a part of the Test and ODI setup but have not played a single T20I yet.
Here are the five players who never played T20Is for India:
5) Pankaj Singh
Pankaj Singh, the former Indian pacer, was an active part of the Indian Test setup and the ODI setup. However, Pankaj never made it to the Indian T20I setup and was never considered for the shortest format of the game.
To add more, the right-arm pacer represented India in 2 Tests and 1 ODI and managed to pick 2 wickets in his career, out of which all of them came in the longest format. In the T20 domestic, the pacer racked up 43 wickets and failed to make it to the international squad in the format.
4) Jayant Yadav
Jayant Yadav, the star Indian spinner, is an active part of the Indian Test squad and has racked up 16 wickets in the longest format of the game. However, Jayant is yet to make a cut to the Indian T20I setup despite faring out well in the Indian T20 League.
While the spinner has played 1 ODI, it remains to be seen if he would be considered in the shortest format of the game, given that India already have Axar Patel, the talented spinner who is fast becoming an impactful player.
3) Mayank Agarwal
The most surprising pick of all is Mayank Agarwal as the batter is also a Test star and has good records in white-ball formats as well, in the domestic circuit. The talented right-handed batter has over 1400 runs in the red-ball format, while he has gathered over 80 runs in the 50-over format.
However, despite averaging over 25 and gathering 4278 runs in the T20 domestics, Agarwal is yet to make his debut in the international squad in the format. With the Punjab franchise getting rid of him ahead of the 2023 Indian T20 League mini-auction, it remains to be seen if he could prove his prowess in a new franchise.
2) Karun Nair
Karun Nair, known for his famous triple-century against England, eventually faded out of the radar since the record and has not been a part of competitive cricket. However, even during his prime days, Nair failed to make it to the Indian T20I squad.
To add more, while Nair was considered for the Test side, despite his impressive outings in the Indian T20 League and other domestic leagues, the right-handed batter failed to make a debut in the format and his comeback at present looks highly unlikely.
1) Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill, the talented right-handed batter, is becoming an unavoidable force in the ODI format for team India. To add more, Gill has gathered over 600 runs in the format at an average of 78 with 1 century and 4 fifties to his name.
The batter has gathered 500 runs in the longest format of the game so far and despite his fabulous outing in the Indian T20 League, due to strike rate concerns, Gill has been sidelined in the shortest format and it remains to be seen if he could make it to the squad anytime soon.
