Rohit Sharma also known as the “Hitman” is one of the top cricketers in world cricket. Rohit has been the talk of the town many times due to his achievements on-field, be it for the huge double hundreds in ODI cricket or winning the Indian T20 League most times as a captain.
While mostly known for “miracles” on the field, Rohit has made it to the headlines sometimes for the wrong reasons. Here are five controversies of Rohit Sharma's fitness.
1. KL Rahul termed overrated in a meme; Rohit accidentally likes it: Rohit came back from an excellent World Cup 2019 campaign, scoring 648 runs in 9 matches at an average of 81. The WC dream run contained five centuries for Rohit. But Rohit was not backed by the team management in the longest format of the game and KL Rahul got a nod ahead of him.
Rahul though not in great form in the Tests, got a chance to play and in spite of starts, the opener was not able to convert them into big scores. The series of ordinary scores by Rahul resulted in a meme by a social media page calling Rahul as overrated, while his averages were compared to that of Rohit himself.
Controversies sparkled up as Rohit ended up “accidentally” liking the post. The incident didn’t go unnoticed by the netizens and the post became viral soon.
2. Alleged relationship with Sofia Hayat: Rohit Sharma is a very happy family man as appears from the posts on his social media page. He has been married to Ritika Sajdeh since 2015.
However, Rohit’s self-claimed ex Sofia Hayat took to social media in October 2012 to reveal that she dated Rohit Sharma.
According to the social media star, Rohit met with her in a club in London, where they kissed and danced together. Rohit Sharma however extinguished all the fire building up by denying his connection and introduced her as his fan to the media. This led to Sofia Hayat ultimately blocking Rohit on Twitter and the so-called relationship ended.
3. Rohit Sharma lashing out at a fan: Rohit Sharma has often been compared to MS Dhoni for his similar cool and composed presence on the field. It's not often that Rohit is found losing his cool. However, a video surfaced on social media where Rohit was seen lashing out on a fan.
As seen in the video, Rohit was batting at the nets, while an onlooker kept on going behind him. The fan was heard using not so good words about the Indian cricketers. After a certain point, Rohit Sharma lost his patience started lashing out at the fan. Rohit was soon joined by a few of his fellow teammates. The backlash from the cricketers ultimately led the fan to apologize to the cricketers.
4. War of words with Dale Steyn: The Indian team was on a tour of South Africa in 2013. The incident happened in the Durban test of the tour. The hosts had an upper hand over the visitors in the match and the South African speedster was giving the Indians a tough time.
Rohit Sharma faced Dale Steyn at a stage when Indians were losing wickets at regular intervals. With the wickets of Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara already to his name, Steyn was in the middle of an excellent spell.
The incident started with Steyn saying Sharma that he won’t just score runs. Rohit stared him down and replied by inviting him over to India to perform the same, within a few minutes. Steyn did not take it silently and went at the batsman saying that they were at Durban and Rohit’s performance in the handful of Tests that he has played in is insignificant. Rohit’s stay in the crease in that innings was not comfortable at all and he departed after scoring 25 runs with India losing the match and the series.
5. Rumored strain relationship with Virat Kohli: There have always been rumours around the relationship of the current Indian captain and his predecessor. Things gained even more attention when Rohit Sharma unfollowed Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli. This was followed by a cryptic message from Anushka Sharma which read – “A Wise Man Once Said Nothing…... Only truth can shake hands with silence in a mess of false appearances”.
Rohit Sharma however later cleared the air by saying that he laughed reading whatever was written on the matter in the media. But the matter went on and on and the fact that his family was dragged into the matter was something he did not like. Rohit felt that Virat Kohli must have felt the same way. He concluded the matter by saying that all the talks about the rift were nothing but rumours.
