Both Chennai and Mumbai have been knocked out of the race for the playoffs in the Indian T20 League 2022. Prior to the start of the 59th match, Chennai still had some hopes of making a top-four finish. However, Mumbai ruined all of that after beating MS Dhoni and Co. by 5 wickets on Thursday at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Chennai didn’t have enough runs on the board. They could only manage to score 97 runs in the first innings. Wickets started falling from the first over itself. On the second ball of the match, Daniel Sams had Devon Conway leg-before before sending Moeen Ali back to the hut in the same over. At the end first over, Chennai were 5 for 2. It quickly became 5 for 3 as Jasprit Bumrah had Robin Uthappa leg-before with a peach of a delivery.
Bowling his third over, Daniel sent Ruturaj Gaikwad back to the hut on the very first ball as Mumbai completely destroyed Chennai’s top order. The Chennai opener departed after scoring 7 runs in 6 balls.
Ambati Rayudu was caught-behind off Meredith in the 6th over to leave MI in complete disarray at 32 for 5 in 6 overs. Shivam Dube hit a four but couldn’t stay for too long either. He departed in the 8th over after scoring just 10 runs in 9 balls.
Wickets kept falling at regular intervals but Dhoni stayed at the crease right till the end. He kept the scoreboard ticking and took the total close to 100. In the end, he remained unbeaten on 36 off 33 balls as Chennai were bowled out for a paltry 97.
Despite scoring a low total, Chennai fought hard with the ball and did their best to make a match out of nothing. Mukesh boundaries, took the first wicket after he had Ishan Kishan caught behind in the very first over of the innings.
Rohit Sharma then hit a string of boundaries, giving Chennai no chance of coming back into the game. However, once again, he failed to convert the start into a big score. On the 3rd ball of the 4th over, he edged one behind to the keeper after scoring 18 runs in 14 balls. Mukesh Chaudhary then got rid of Daniel Sams and T Stubbs in the very next over to leave Mumbai in trouble at 34 for 4. At the end of the power play, Mumbai were 36 for 4.
However, the Men in Yellow couldn’t pick another wicket in the next six over. Tilak Varma and Hrithik Shokeen added 53 runs for the 5th wicket to bring the team back into the game. Moeen Ali broke the partnership in the 13th over after picking the wicket of Shoheen (18 off 23), however, the match was done and dusted by then.
The man in form, Tilak Varma, once again, held firm at one end and played right till the end. He carried the team home with an unbeaten knock of 33 runs in 30 balls. Tim David also remained unbeaten on 10 off 6 as Mumbai chased down the score inside 15 overs.
