Devdutt Padikkal is back in tremendous form with the bat as he scored 193 versus Punjab during the Indian domestic season. Karnataka and Punjab are playing their first game of the season
The youngster is looking to revive his career after making a handful of appearances for India in 2021. Ahead of the new IPL season, Padikkal has moved to Lucknow Super Giants in a trade while Avesh Khan goes the other way.
At the end of the day, Karnataka had taken a massive lead against a strong Punjab side. Arshdeep Singh is leading the bowling unit with veteran Siddharth Kaul. Some of the well-known young players from IPL too are part of the Punjab side.
Devdutt Padikkal falls short of maiden double century –
23-year-old batting sensation Devdutt Padikkal has scored his career-best score of 193 for Karnataka. The knock came off just 216 balls with 24 boundaries and four huge sixes to record his best first-class score.
Veteran batter Manish Pandey scored his twenty-fourth first-class century and added 234 runs for the fourth wicket. The stand between Pandey and Padikkal came at a good rate in just 296 balls.
Prerit Dutta did the damage as he removed the youngster caught by Baltej Singh to break the partnership. Manish Pandey fell to Arshdeep Singh caught by Abhishek Sharma for 118. At stumps Karnataka were 309 runs ahead with Srinivas Sharath batting on 55 and Vijaykumar Vyshak on 15.
Elsewhere veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara sent out a timely reminder to the selectors with a huge century. The 35-year-old was batting on 157 runs from 239 balls with 19 hits to the fence with a strike rate of 65.
The defending champions are playing at home against Jharkhand and have taken a massive lead. Batting first the visitors were bowled out for with thanks to the fifer by Chirga Jani. Rinku Singh scored 92 for Uttar Pradesh before the team was bowled out for 302. In reply Sanju Samson led side was 124/3 at the end of the day still trailing by 178 runs.
