The Ben Stokes-led England have created history against India by winning the fifth Test by seven wickets. They were set a target of 378 runs which they never achieved before in the longest format of the game. Their highest prior to today was 359, which was achieved against Australia in the 2019 Ashes. The game is remembered for Stokes' heroics as he batted alongside Jack Leach, who was the last batter.
Talking about this rescheduled Test, it was part of the five-match Test series played last year. The series was dominated majorly by India with the team leading the series by 2-1. As a matter of fact, the Nottingham Test, which ended in a draw due to rain, might have gone in India's favour. Meanwhile, the team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat at Lord's. Leading by 1-0, they had a setback in Headingley where they lost by an innings.
However, they came back well in The Oval Test and won the game to take an unassailable lead in the series. The visitors were looking to beat the down and out Englishmen at Old Trafford. The Indian fans were waiting for history to be made after 2007. However, the game had to be postponed due to COVID 19 cases in the Indian camp. Due to this, the Test had to be shifted.
The game was then scheduled to be played at the Edgbaston in Birmingham which used to be England's fortress from 2001 to 2019. This time around, the Three Lions' spirits were high after beating New Zealand at home by 3-0. The team's success was credited to the bold approach brought by new head coach Brendon McCullum.
It was seen once again when they had to chase 378 runs against the Jasprit Bumrah-led side. Interestingly enough, the Asian team never conceded this many runs in the fourth innings. As they say, records are meant to be broken. They might now realize what Australia went through after Gabba Test.
