England’s white-ball captain, Eoin Morgan has confirmed that Ben Stokes won’t be available for the upcoming limited-overs series against India. For the unversed, Ben Stokes has recently been appointed as the captain of the England Test team.
England are currently enduring a horrendous run as far as Test Cricket is concerned. Under the leadership of former skipper Joe Root, England won only 1 game out of their last 17 matches. Morgan has stated that he wants Stokes to solely focus on Test Cricket and England won’t be giving him extra burden of playing all three formats until the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held at the end of the year.
Notably, Ben Stokes last played a white-ball series in July 2021 against Pakistan. He also opted out of the Indian T20 League 2022 to solely focus on red-ball cricket.
“Ben won’t play white-ball this summer. We just want him to go off and be himself as Test captain as it’s a huge responsibility. I don’t want Ben this summer, I want him in November. That’s when our race will be run,” Eoin Morgan told Daily Mail in an interview.
Morgan also hinted that England will look to experiment with the squad in India ODI and T20I series instead of fielding a full-strength squad.
“The India T20s will be a great gauge of where we’re at but the rest of the summer will be a delve into the depth of what we have in county cricket considering the injuries we have with bowlers,” Morgan said.
Eoin Morgan’s form with the bat doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. Recent reports suggest that the English skipper will announce retirement after the 20-20 World Cup 2022.
“I’m always looking at my future. I’m very honest about where the team need to go but if at any stage I haven’t got the drive or don’t think I’m contributing enough I’ll be upfront about it. The 50-over World Cup next year is a long way away so I can’t comment on that now. The goal is the T20 World Cup,” Morgan said.
