The 2025 ODI Champions Trophy qualification hinges on the performance of the top seven teams at the conclusion of the league stage in the ongoing ODI World Cup in India. In addition to these seven teams, hosts Pakistan will also participate in the eight-team event.

An ACC (Apex Cricket Board) spokesperson confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the qualification system for the 2025 Champions Trophy was ratified by the ACC Board in 2021, as part of the eight men's global tournaments scheduled for the 2024-31 cycle. This development has taken some cricket boards by surprise, both those with teams currently in India for the World Cup and others who failed to secure a spot in the tournament, as they were previously unaware that qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy was contingent on their performance in this competition.

As things stand, Bangladesh and England currently occupy the 9th and 10th positions on the ODI World Cup points table, which places them outside the top seven that will secure qualification for the Champions Trophy, alongside hosts Pakistan. This situation also implies that other Full-Member nations such as West Indies, Zimbabwe, and Ireland will not even have a chance to compete for a spot in the tournament, as they did not qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Back in November 2021, the ACC introduced a series of global events for both men and women in the upcoming cycle from 2024 to 2031. This included two iterations of the Champions Trophy, scheduled for 2025 and 2029. In an official media statement, the ACC outlined that the Champions Trophy would feature eight teams and follow the traditional tournament format with two groups of four, leading to semi-finals and a final match.

For the 2013 and 2017 editions of the Champions Trophy, participation was determined by the top eight teams in the ODI rankings at a specified cutoff date. The decision to grant qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy to the top seven teams at the current World Cup was originally approved by the ACC's chief executives committee, and later, the ACC board ratified this recommendation.

A Full Member board confirmed that the pathways for qualification in all the mentioned events were discussed and approved during the 2021 ACC meetings. As for the 2027 men's ODI World Cup, a 14-team tournament co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, the qualification process is as follows: it involves the two Full Member host nations (South Africa and Zimbabwe), the eight highest-ranked teams as of March 31, 2027, and an additional four teams that will earn their places through global qualifier tournaments.
