The last few months haven't really been great for England. They have won just one out of their last 17 Tests. After losing the Ashes 2021-22 by 4-0, the poms have now lost the three-match Test series to the West Indies as well.
Thus, this had led to Joe Root being severely criticized once again. Several pundits and experts have called for him to be axed as England's red-ball skipper. It is to be noted that the batter had earlier expressed his willingness to continue as England's Test captain. However, several fans have gone on to criticize England's selection calls, and blame him as well.
However, England's interim head coach Paul Collingwood came in support of Root. He drew light on the batting maestro's passion and hunger to do better. Collingwood stated that Root is desperate to restore the glory days of England.
"Sometimes it amazes me that he gets questioned, because of how it feels within the dressing room," he added. "It's the first time I've experienced him as a head coach, and worked with him. You can see the passion, the drive. There's a real hunger to get it right. These aren't just words coming out of his mouth. He's desperate to get the team back to winning games of cricket.
I can't say anything but positivity in terms of what he's done leadership-wise in the dressing room, trying to move this team forward. He's been unbelievable in this Test series to work with and see how he goes about his business, and being able to give the rest of the players' responsibility," said Paul Collingwood, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
The 45-year-old also mentioned that Root has the backing of the entire team management, as well as the players. Besides, amidst England's poor returns in red-ball cricket, the 31-year-old has been exceptional with the bat. He has been scoring centuries for fun of late.
"When you have that kind of record, I can understand where the noise comes from.
