After a dismal performance in the 2022 Indian T20 League (ITL), Chennai knew they had to make some major personnel changes to turn things around in 2023, which will likely be the final season for four-time champion MS Dhoni. After letting go of a few players, the franchise amassed a sizable sum of money, and they successfully signed Ben Stokes, England's Test captain and one of the best cricketers in the world right now, in the auction.

Stokes enrolled for the auction this time around after skipping the 2022 season to concentrate on retooling England's Test team, and Chennai made him the joint-third most expensive player in the ITL auction ever. After a six-year absence, Stokes, who has previously played for the Rajasthan and Pune franchises, will team up for the first time with top all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
