Pakistan fans were eager to see how their team would perform in the third game of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan when the match occurred in Colombo on 26 August 2023. Before the game, the Men in Green had already won the series and they were in the second spot in the rankings in terms of ODI sides.

So, they were looking for a win to clean-sweep the series and become the new number-one-ranked side in ODIs. However, they did not disappoint their fans as Babar Azam and his men registered a 59-run win and hence, became the new number one-ranked ODI side in the world. Therefore, fans have reacted on social media.

Now, Pakistan will begin their Asia Cup campaign as the number one-ranked team in the 50-over format. They now have 2725 points with 118 ratings in 23 games at the top spot. They overtook Australia (2714 points with 118 ratings in 23 games). India are in the third spot with 4081 points with 113 rankings in 36 games. Speaking of the match, Pakistan batted first and scored 268 runs for eight wickets in 50 overs. In reply, the Afghans got bundled out for 209 runs. Mohammad Rizwan won the Player of the Match award while Imam-ul-Haq was adjusted to the Player of the Series for scoring 165 runs.

Regarding the match and their achievement, Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam said: “We are No.1 . All credit to boys. We had a small camp in Lahore. They worked hard for the last couple of months. After the Test. everybody prepared well. As you know, they are one of the best spin sides. It was not easy to bat on. We were just trying to build a partnership, go deep and back each other. Wanted to be calm and composed to end the game. We wanted to try our bench, a few young players also. tried different combinations to understand before the Asia Cup. wanted to give everyone confidence.”
