Team India youngster Ravi Bishnoi has become the World No. 1 T20I bowler in the latest rankings updated on Wednesday, December 6. The leg-spinner was rewarded for his impressive performances in the recently concluded five-match T20I series vs Australia. The 23-year-old has dethroned Afghanistan spin wizard Rashid Khan to join an elite list of Indian bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, who topped the men's T20 bowling rankings. He was ranked fifth in the previous update but has now moved to the top with 699 points, overtaking Rashid (692 points), who has held the crown since March 2023.Β

Bishnoi's success has been attributed to his consistent performance over the past year. The right-arm spinner, who made his debut in February 2022, has taken 34 wickets in 21 matches so far. He also tied Ravichandran Ashwin's record for most wickets (9) for India in a bilateral T20I series during the series against Australia.Β

Bishnoi has also been called upon to represent India in the upcoming tour of South Africa. India will play three T20Is starting December 10 and Bishnoi is a surefire player feature in the XI. It is quite fair to say that the Rajasthan cricketer has overtaken senior spinner Yuzvendra Chahal as a strong contender for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Notably, Bishnoi is the only Indian in the latest men's bowling rankings. The latest development means that India now holds the top ranks in both batting and bowling in the shorter format of the game. Suryakumar Yadav remains on the top spot with 855 points, followed by Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan (787). Meanwhile, India's opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has managed to remain in the top ten (7th spot) of the batters' chart.

Here's how fans reacted to Ravi Bishnoi becoming the No. 1 T20 bowler:
