David Warner was synonymous with Hyderabad. However, he wasn't retained by them after a poor season with the bat in the fourteenth edition of the league. Post the completion of the 2021 edition, the opener went on to win the player of the series award in the 20-20 World Cup 2021.
Thus, there was a lot of hype around him ahead of the mega auction. Several pundits believed that he could be a potential captaincy candidate for a few franchises as well. Thus, the fans were eagerly waiting for his name to come up during the mega auction.
However, the Delhi-based franchise have managed to purchase him for INR 6.25 crore. It is safe to call this an absolute steal deal. Acquiring his services wasn't that easy for the Pant-led side as several teams like Chennai engaged in a bidding war for him.
However, Delhi have ensured that Warner now unites with his fellow countrymen Ricky Ponting. Yet, he, alongside a few other Australian players will miss the initial few games of the 2022 edition. They are all set to tour Pakistan for an all-format series.
“We do see the ITL as a really good development opportunity when it fits, but there’s obviously a huge amount of cricket with a series (in Sri Lanka) planned for immediately-post the IPL as well,” George Bailey, Australia’s chief selector, had said during a recent media interaction. “So it will be about working with the individuals to ensure they’re getting the preparation they need, but we certainly won’t be releasing players to the ITL while Australia are playing," he added.
It is to be noted that he is arguably one of the greatest players in the history of the Indian T20 league. He has scored 5449 runs at an average of 41.6 in the biggest T20 league in the world. As a matter of fact, he also led the Hyderabad-led franchise to their maiden title in 2016 as well. Last but not the least, he has also won the Orange Cap thrice as well. Thus, Warner is all set to play for Delhi after a really long time.
