Mitchell Starc has won the Allan Border’s Medal for the year 2021. It is to be noted that this is the first time he won the prestigious medal. In the meanwhile, Ashleigh Gardner won the Belinda Clark award for emerging as the top player of Australian Women’s Cricket.
It is to be noted that the award winners were decided on the basis of a voting system and Starc had a neck-to-neck battle with Mitchell Marsh, which the speedster eventually won. Starc pipped Marsh by just one vote, as he received 107 votes to Marsh's 106. The panel of voters comprises of players, people from the media and also the umpires. Thus, Starc became the fifth Australian bowler to win the coveted Allan Border medal.
Travis Head wins the Men’s Test Player of the Year award
The other bowlers to have achieved his feat are Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Pat Cummins. Starc had a sensational 2021, as he picked 41 wickets across all formats in the year. Besides, as he picked 11 wickets in three ODIs, he was also awarded the ODI Men's Player of The Year.
In the meanwhile, Travis Head won the Men’s Test Player of the Year award. One of the major reasons for it was his superb performance during the Ashes 2021-22. He scored the most number of runs in the five-match Test series, which included two centuries as well. On the other hand, Mitchell Marsh won the T20 Men’s Player of the Year award.
The batting all-rounder played an influential role in Australia winning the ICC T20 WC 2021. Besides, he scored 627 runs in 20 innings at a strike rate of close to 130 in the shortest format of the game. Further on, Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney won the Women's ODI and T20I Player of The Year awards respectively.
