England and India locked horns in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. After winning the toss, the visitors elected to bat first on a flat track and big boundaries on offer. The decision started proving right before skipper Rohit Sharma (29) was caught behind by Jos Buttler off Moeen Ali. Ishan Kishan (8) followed soon after as he became the second victim of Ali.
However, even after the early, the team didn't stop scoring big runs every over. Deepak Hooda (33) played 17 balls and scored three fours and two sixes before he was caught at short backward square led by Tymal Mills off Chris Jordan. Suryakumar Yadav (39 off 17) also kept things going before he gloved, trying to play a pull shot, and was caught by Buttler off Jordan. Axar Patel (17) played a nice cameo before getting out to Matthew Parkinson.
Hardik Pandya scored 51 off just 33 balls including six fours and a six before he got out when 2.2 overs left in the innings. At this stage, the team was looking like getting past 200-runs with Dinesh Karthik. However, the Red Brigade clawed its way back and restricted the Rohit Sharma-led side to 198/8. In rely, the Buttler-led side got off to a poor start as they lost four early wickets.
The newly-appointed skipper of the Three Lions was cleaned by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the first over. In the fifth over, Pandya clean bowled Dawid Malan (21) who was playing well. The all-rounder took the priced wicket of Liam Livingstone (0) who was caught behind by Karthik. In the third over of his spell, the Gujarat player took the wicket of Jason Roy (4) who was badly struggling at the crease.
Ali and Harry Brook stitched a partnership of 61 runs before the latter was caught at deep midwicket by Suryakumar off Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal took out Ali in the same over which pretty much ended the game for the hosts. In the 14th over, Hardik completed his four-wicket haul. England lost the game by 50 runs.
