Ramiz Raja, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), suggested that if the Asia Cup 2023 was moved from Pakistan, they might not participate. The Asia Cup is currently set to be hosted by Pakistan, but according to Jay Shah, the secretary of the Indian Cricket Board, India won't be going to Pakistan for the event the following year.
"It's not as if we don't have hosting rights and we're pleading to host it. We won the rights fair and square. If India doesn't come, they won't come. If the Asia Cup gets taken away from Pakistan, maybe we're the ones that pull out,” Ramiz was quoted as saying on the sidelines of Pakistan vs England Test in Rawalpindi, ESPNcricinfo reported.
Raja reacted angrily, saying that Pakistan shouldn't have been given to Pakistan in the first place if India had problems travelling. Pakistan has hosted a number of teams in the past couple of years, including England, Australia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and many others. According to Raja, Pakistan has demonstrated its qualifications to host powerful nations.
"We've shown we can host great teams. I can understand issues relating to bilateral cricket, but the Asia Cup is a multi-nation tournament, almost as big as the World Cup for the Asian bloc,” he stated.
"Why give it to us in the first place and then make all those statements about India not travelling to Pakistan? I accept that India won't come because the government won't allow them to come - fine. But to take the Asia Cup away from the host on that basis isn't right," Ramiz added.
In the meantime, Twitter slammed the PCB President for his comments. "Kitni baar batayega ye PR raja? attention nahi dera kya koi isko, 15-16th time bolra hai, triggered h shyd," a user tweeted. Another fan wrote, "He is just doing this to divert the Mind of people from this boring tests Match."
