Sanju Samson has been benched again for the Third ODI vs New Zealand. The Indian Team opted to stay in with the same playing XI as the second ODI. Samson was benched for the entire T20 leg of the New Zealand series and then played the first ODI before being benched in the second and third ODIs.
He had played a good innings of 36 off 38 balls with four boundaries which helped India to get to a score of 306 in the first ODI. He had to be dropped as the team management wanted to have a sixth bowling option and so Deepak Hooda was drafted in place of Samson. Deepak Chahar was drafted in for Shardul Thakur.
Samson has been in and out of the Indian side which has resulted in him not getting a consistent run. Samson has not been selected for the ODIs against Bangladesh and so will go back to India after the series finishes. In 11 matches in ODIs, he has scored 330 runs at an average of 66 and at a strike rate of 104.76. He has been hard done by due to a lot of other factors such as team combinations and other variables.
He was not able to get into the side even as a keeper because of India giving preference to Rishabh Pant. Notably, Pant has been backed by the management amidst a dry spell of form. He has played three ODI matches against the Blackcaps and scored just 25 runs. He has had an average of 12.50 and a strike rate of 64.10.
The fans were not happy with Samson’s omission from the side and there were big trends on social media 'We want Sanju' and 'Justice for Sanju Samson'. These were the trends which were erupting. The fans were venting the ire on the Indian management as Samson continued to be benched despite him churning the runs in the limited opportunities that he has gotten.
Twitter was abuzz, let us take a look at the reactions here -
