On 29 April 2023, Pakistan took on New Zealand in the second ODI of the ongoing five-match series at home. The Men in Green won the series opener and Fakhar Zaman was the Player of the Match. He scored 117 runs off 114 balls as Pakistan chased down the target of 289 runs with five wickets to spare.
So, all eyes were on the opener once again when he came out to bat while chasing 337 runs. He did not disappoint this time also as Fakhar Zaman scored 180* runs off 144 balls. His knock ensured that Pakistan won the game with seven wickets to spare. Thus, the home side took a 2-0 lead with three more matches to go.
“I think it was my lucky day to score again against New Zealand” - Fakhar Zaman
Speaking of the match, New Zealand batted first and scored 336 runs for five wickets in 50 overs. Daryl Mitchell scored 129 runs off 119 balls, including eight fours and three sixes. But, in reply, the Men in Green chased down the target in 48.2 overs. After this century, Zaman has now scored three consecutive centuries in his last three ODI innings. Interestingly, all those tons came against the Kiwis. He also became the joint second-quickest batter to score 3000+ ODI runs in terms of innings (67). Even, the world’s number one ODI batter and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam took 68 innings to reach the same landmark.
After the second ODI, Zaman shared his views during the post-match presentation after receiving his Player of the Match award. He said: "I try to take my time in the start in ODI cricket, and then with five players in the circle it becomes easier to score. Practice is usually done on technique and I work on my shortcomings as well but to be honest, I think it was my lucky day to score again against New Zealand. I get a lot of liberty while playing with Rizwan and he made things easier for me. I was told to stay at the crease till the end and this approach is what is working in our team's favour"
Here is how fans have lauded the top knock from Zaman:
