The big assignment coming for the Asian sides is the Asia Cup. The continental tournament will be co-hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Teams are getting ready and training hard for the tournament. The squads for the teams are being announced and have made a lot of headlines. When we talk about the Asia Cup and Bangladesh, the big change for them is that Shakib Al Hasan will take the reins again.

The all-rounder will lead the Bangladesh side in the Asia Cup and also in the 2023 World Cup. Shakib will lead the side and will take over from Tamim Iqbal who has a back injury and will miss the multilateral tournament. There were earlier reports stating that Litton Das could become the captain of the ODI side. But the job has gone to Shakib yet again.

Shakib Al Hasan has led Bangladesh in 52 ODIs

"We have appointed Shakib as the captain for the Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squads will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members," said Nazmul Hassan, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president.

Shakib is no stranger to the job having done it multiple times before. The all-rounder took over T20I captaincy in 2022. In familiar conditions, Bangladesh will want to make a statement and be a force to reckon with ahead of the 2023 World Cup. Since the conditions in Sri Lanka will be spin conducive Bangladesh will be a threat. In the 2011 World Cup they did brilliantly on home turf and got a big win over England.

When it comes to Shakib, the captain, he has led Bangladesh in 52 ODIs, 19 Tests and 39 T20Is. When Shakib began to take charge in 2009 he had a few infrequent stints. He also has a huge temper problem and has been involved in violent outbursts with umpires. It remains to be seen how he will resolve this issue as he will be seen in the spotlight again.
